7 Step-by-step guide to de-tan the skin at home

Choose the right product for your first time

Opt for a beginner-friendly self-tanning product with a guide color or a gradual tan like Vita Liberata Fabulous Self Tanning Gradual Lotion or St. Tropez Self Tan Classic Bronzing Mousse.

Start your prep the night beforE

Exfoliate with a sugar or salt scrub, shave at least four hours before tanning, and moisturize knuckles, knees, elbows, and ankles an hour before application.

Don’t apply in the shower

Apply self-tanner in front of a mirror to ensure even coverage, avoiding the shower to easily wipe away any spills with a damp cloth.

Don’t use your bare hands

Use a mitt, an extra-large foundation brush, or a Beautyblender body sponge to avoid orange or brown palm prints, as palms don't naturally tan.

Save your hands and feet for last

Apply self-tanner in circular motions, finishing with the backs of hands and tops of feet, using excess product sparingly.

Dilute the body product for your face

Mix three parts moisturizer to one part self-tanner for the face, dabbing a slightly damp cloth around lips, nose edges, and eyebrows after application.

Soak away your mistakes

If you make mistakes or experience streaks, soak in a bath or steam in a sauna to tone down the tint.
